April Fools! What specific calendar days does for an organisation online.

A day for digital marketers to be creative in their pursuit of attention and interest.

Well, another year has passed where the petty pranks are accepted as the norm…but over the last few years, April Fools Day has become a vehicle for many businesses to use digital marketing in order to capture the attention of their potential customers in a playful nature.

Like SuperBowl commercials, it has become a mission for many organisations with a presence online to construct the best prank that incorporates their business for additional exposure.

In my opinion, IKEA, Punters.com and PornHub (sorry) constructed brilliant pranks that ultimately had the public sharing to their friends, thus, spreading exposure to brand names and values.

It is not uncommon for businesses to use internationally recognised days to promote their business. International Women’s Day recently is one the springs prolifically to mind, or even Mothers/Fathers Day, as well as Valentines Day, are used to promote certain intricacies of their business through digital methods.

Here, even the prestigious tennis tournament Wimbledon is seen promoting #nationalpuppyday, something that is totally irrelevant to tennis but would increase the exposure of the tournament.

Do you have any favourite April Fools Day pranks where companies constructed a prank on you?

Have you seen organisations promoting internationally allocated days in order to increase their exposure?

Let me know your thoughts.

  1. Love the concept of April fools, always a good way for brands to get a message across using humour! Do you think the best way to fully take advantage of these events throughout the year is humour? and which day do you think receives the most digit attention?

    1. I think that constructing something that resonates with the audience is key, and humour is certainly a vehicle of this. More recently, International Women’s Day received lots of attention as well as of course Mothers Day and Fathers Day every year, but i think April Fools is right up there in terms of digital content and possibilities for Digital Marketers. Thanks for your thoughts Will!
